Adamawa State governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has pledged financial the sum of N5 million as financial support to Mary Victor Zira, a 12-year-old chess prodigy and internally displaced person (IDP) from Michika local government area.
Mary, who resides at the EYN IDP Camp in Yola, was trained under the Chess in IDP Camps Initiative — a programme designed to empower displaced children through intellectual sports.
Her exceptional skill and determination saw her rise rapidly in the game of chess.
Mary represented Nigeria at the Chess and Community Tournament in Atlanta, Georgia, United States where she emerged victorious, and also participated in the United Nations Games held in New York.
The Convener of the initiative, Vivian Ibrahim, led a delegation, including some staff members, to the Government House, Yola, where Mary presented her trophy to Governor Fintiri.
The team also displayed one of the 750 chess boards donated to the initiative by The Gift of Chess organisation in New York to promote chess development in Northern Nigeria.
Governor Fintiri, while congratulating Mary on her outstanding achievements, praised her for demonstrating resilience, intelligence, and determination despite her challenging circumstances.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting talent development among youths, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“Mary’s story is a remarkable example of hope and excellence emerging from adversity,” Fintiri said. “We will continue to support young people like her who bring pride to Adamawa and to Nigeria.”
Mary, who is currently on full scholarship at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) Academy, expressed gratitude to the governor for his support and encouragement.
