Governor of Bauchi State Bala Mohammed has raised concerns over the growing trend of cutting of trees for illegal charcoal production in communities across the state.

He said the practice exposes the land to environmental hazards.

Speaking to a team of environmental experts from Oxfam Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, who visited Bauchi, the governor warned that perpetrators would be made to face the full wrath of the law for cutting down trees that ordinarily safeguard the environment.

He said his administration would do a comprehensive legal framework to strengthen environmental protection and enhance climate resilience across Bauchi communities.

Governor Mohammed commended both Oxfam Nigeria and the ministry for the initiative. He also lauded other organisations for their commitment to promoting environmental sustainability in the state.

He, therefore, directed the Secretary to the State Government to present the policy document submitted by the delegation to the State Executive Council for further deliberation and action.

Representatives of Oxfam Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, praised Bauchi State’s growing collaboration with development partners.

They described it as a positive step toward addressing environmental degradation and building resilience in vulnerable communities.
