Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs Ibrahim Waiya has described the LEADERSHIP’s recognition of Governor Abba Yusuf as Governor of the year 2024 as well-deserved.
He stated this while highlighting the governor’s achievements in the education sector in the last two years, during which the national daily recognised him.
He hailed the governor’s commitment to the sector, saying he even declared a state of emergency and devoted about 30 per cent of the 2024 budget to it.
“With the total amount declared to the education sector as well as the state of emergency, he first renovated all the classes in the 44 local government areas and built two blocks of classes in all the schools in the local government areas.
“He has also provided school uniforms free to all those in the primary school sector. Those that benefitted from this gesture are more than 700,000.
“He then reintroduced the foreign scholarship, an initiative started by our leader, His Excellency Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He left behind this very good legacy, and the executive governor decided to build on that legacy.
He reintroduced the same kind of project. In the first round of the project, he sponsored 1001 students to study at different universities across the globe. I am happy to tell you that out of this number, 150 have already returned home with Master’s Degrees from the University in India.
“Again, when the times became tough and there was an increment of school fees in the federal universities, there was fear that many of the students in the universities who were from Kano may drop out. The governor, in his magnanimity, provided over N700 million to support Kano indigenes students across the federation.
“He supported all the state-owned universities, like the Northwest University and the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, by providing the needed support for accreditation. Recently, Northwest University got the license to start the MBBS (Medicine) course, and at the same time, it has also gotten accreditation to start its own faculty of law. Already, they are in the process of admitting students to commence studying law there.
“He had invested a lot in the Sa’adatu Rimi College Of Education, which provides a steady supply of uninterrupted electricity as the college is connected to the Tiga Independent Power Plant owned and managed by the Kano State government. These are to mention but a few.
“At the same time, he recruited 3,866 teachers for primary schools.
“He allocated large sums of money for the state’s NECO, NBAIS and WAEC registration. This is part of the hitch students face in other states where the examination bodies withhold results. The state government paid N1.6 billion to settle all outstanding liabilities.
“At the same time, in the last council meeting we held, the governor also decided to allocate additional money to be deposited with WAEC, NECO and NBAIS. All liabilities have been cleared as far as Kano State is concerned.
“At the same time, the governor decided to reduce the tuition paid by the Kano State students by 50 percent in all the state’s tertiary institutions. That has allowed the Kano state students in tertiary institutions to pay their fees without a hitch.
“The executive governor further decided to provide educational material like tables and chairs. Hundreds of thousands of tables and chairs were distributed across the 44 local governments in the state, and this is still happening.
