He made the call at the commissioning of a modern church of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) movement built by a philanthropist Jerry Joseph Damara in Kulishin community of Shongom local government area of Gombe State.
Gowon prayed that the church would be of very great blessings to the people of the area and a centre of peace, unity, and piety and tasked religious leaders to always strive to promote peace and tranquility among the compatriots.

LEADERSHIP reports that the edifice was inaugurated by the former head of state flanked by the governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang and deputy governors of Gombe and Taraba states who represented their principals.

In his goodwill message, Mutfwang commended Damara for building a church where people will come and serve God.
He called on the congregants to dedicate their lives so that “God will dwell in them” adding that “God desires that they first dedicate themselves so that he will take control of their lives.”

Also, in attendance at the event, were ECWA International president, Stephen Panya Baba, former ministers of information, Jerry Gana, youths and sports, Solomon Dalung, women affairs Pauline Tallen, and former speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, traditional rulers and senators among others.
