Abuja journalists are celebrating this Christmas with a significant boost to their welfare, thanks to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council. Under the leadership of Comrade Grace Ike, the council has distributed over 600 bags of rice to its members in Abuja, a gesture aimed at alleviating economic pressures and fostering unity among practitioners.
The annual tradition, now in its second year, underscored the council’s commitment to members’ welfare. Comrade Ike highlighted that the initiative was “more than a distribution; it is a heartfelt commitment to the welfare of every one of you who tirelessly upholds the pillars of truth, accountability and public service.”
Prior to the distribution, Comrade Ike and the Executive Council held an end-of-year session with chapel chairmen and secretaries, where progress, including the ongoing renovation of the NUJ Congress Hall, was discussed. The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote of confidence in Comrade Ike’s “proactive, pragmatic, purposeful and performance-driven” leadership.
Addressing journalists, Comrade Ike emphasised the importance of solidarity, especially given the challenges faced by media professionals. She expressed gratitude to sponsors and partners for their support, affirming that their collective efforts were “rewriting narratives of care and community” within the NUJ FCT Council. Members were encouraged to embrace the festive spirit with a renewed sense of shared purpose alongside their Christmas provisions.
