In a bid to end the prevailing insecurity challenge in Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation under the auspices of APUDI Institute for Peace Studies and Social Rehabilitation (APIS) has called for the use of a modern empirical, systematic and scientific approach to reverse the trend.

President of the Institute, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd) made the call at a  conference organised in Abuja by APUDI in conjunction with African Peace Institute for Social Research and the UN Office on Genocide Prevention with the theme: Promoting Empirical Research for Peace Practice and Safety in Africa: A Peer Review.

Al-Mustapha, a former chief security officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, accused Nigeria’s past leaders of negligence, saying with the state of insecurity Nigeria is witnessing today, an intellectual approach can rescue the nation when recommendations are diligently applied.

He further said former leaders allowed things to deteriorate and degenerate to a crisis level and that what must be done urgently now is damage control.

According to him, the security situation in Nigeria, and indeed most African nations, has been neglected for so long and has degenerated to the level where the mechanism of damage control becomes inevitable in finding solutions to the intractable challenges of banditry, terrorism, and violent crimes.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun who was represented by DIG Moses Jagaba, said as operators on the front line, they witnessed firsthand the effects of conflict and its devastation.
