A group, Arewa Youth Protection, Unity and Peaceful Forum, has alleged the presence of fake, counterfeit, substandard, and expired food items in Kano markets.
It expressed the fear that the fake products were endangering the health of millions of Nigerians in the state.
In a statement made available to journalists yesterday in Kano, the group called on NAFDAC, SON, the Consumer Protection Council, and other relevant stakeholders to take action.
The statement, signed by the group’s national secretary general, Ali Sani Haladu, stated that they had investigated many substandard spices containing monosodium glutamate (MSG) and various trademarks.
As a result of its investigation, the group held an emergency meeting with stakeholders, where they unanimously resolved to take action.
“Draw the attention of Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission to stop this menace for the betterment of our society. As the saying goes: ‘Health is Wealth'”, the group said.
Responding to the group’s allegations, the Consumer Protection Council in Kano said the group had not contacted it.
Its director of enlightenment, Malam Sabo, said the organisation regularly inspects the markets to protect the general public’s lives and health.
On the issue of spices containing monosodium glutamate, he explained that some are processed, which is allowed, and those that are not processed are not allowed.
