A group, the Pro-People Security and Development Think Tank, has endorsed the proposed salary increase for Nigerian soldiers. It said the move will boost troops’ morale and enhance operational effectiveness.

The group made the call on Monday during a Peace and Development rally held in Masaka, Nasarawa State, where community leaders, civil society actors and residents gathered to advocate for security, social cohesion and community-driven development.

At the event, the group’s convener, Michael Adamu, said the proposed salary increase for soldiers would strengthen troops’ morale and further enhance their operational effectiveness.

Adamu praised the Nigerian military for what he described as professionalism, adherence to human rights and operational successes in combating terrorism and insecurity.

He said security operations must balance confronting violent threats with safeguarding civilian lives.

Adamu commended the armed forces for neutralising terrorist leaders and rescuing kidnapped individuals across the country, citing the recent operation in Kubwa/Bwari which led to the safe recovery of several victims.

He added that improvements in human rights training and accountability mechanisms within the military had contributed to a more disciplined operational environment.

Adamu stressed that human security is inseparable from development and called for greater investment in programmes addressing poverty, unemployment and social exclusion, which he said are often exploited by violent groups.

Participants at the rally also advocated stronger community engagement, as well as dialogue and collaboration with security agencies, as key measures to prevent violence and promote national unity.

The think tank also praised the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, noting that reforms under his stewardship have strengthened operational discipline and public confidence in military operations.

The organisation said the military’s commitment to human rights and civilian protection shows that security and respect for fundamental freedoms are complementary objectives.

Observers noted that events such as the Masaka Peace and Development rally reflect a growing recognition of the importance of collective action in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
