Group Condemns El-Rufai’s Attempt To Reclaim Northern Values After Abandoning It

The Northern Unity Front (NUF) has expressed its disapproval of the recent attempts by Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, to position himself as a saviour for the North.

In a statement by the NUF chairman, Comrade Yusuf Umar, the group said this press statement served as a clarion call to all northern leaders and constituents to reflect on El-Rufai’s tenure and the values he has, regrettably, abandoned in his misuse of power.

It said El-Rufai’s time in office was marked by a series of audacious moves that often crossed the boundaries of decorum and respect for the region’s political heritage. It added that his governance style, characterised by a boldness that sometimes bordered on hubris, has left a bitter taste in the mouths of many who once saw him as a potential beacon of hope for the North.

It noted that his self-aggrandising statements and actions, particularly during the deaths and political declines of key figures such as President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and President Goodluck Jonathan, showcased a profound disregard for the values of empathy and respect that are deeply entrenched in our culture.

It noted that in his quest for relevance, El-Rufai has made attempts to rewrite his narrative, seeking validation from the very leaders and constituents he once alienated, saying his previous disdain for the legacies of the founding fathers, including the revered Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and other icons of Nigerian unity, has not been forgotten.

It added that his dismissive remarks about these leaders, who fought tirelessly for the nation’s unity and progress, reveal a dangerous tendency to prioritise personal ambition over collective memory and respect.

The statement reads, “The Northern Unity Front firmly believes that true leadership is rooted in humility and a deep understanding of the historical and cultural context of one’s constituency. El-Rufai’s authoritarian governance style, which sidelined dissenting voices and undermined democratic principles, has led to a significant erosion of his political capital. His recent attempts to don the mantle of a saviour are not only disingenuous but also an affront to the values that our region holds dear.

“As he seeks redemption in a shifting political landscape, we urge El-Rufai to reflect on the lessons of his past. Power is ephemeral, and those who wield it must do so with a profound awareness of the relationships that bind us together as a society.

“The Northern Unity Front calls upon all northern leaders to prioritise the collective good over individual ambition, to respect the legacies of our past, and to work towards a future that embodies the values of unity, respect, and humility. The Northern Unity Front remains committed to advocating for true leadership that honours the sacrifices of our past leaders and fosters a political culture that is inclusive, respectful, and progressive.”
