A group, Vanguard for Democracy and Peace, has asserted that the fresh impeachment move against Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is constitutional.
It insisted that the action was a lawful response to alleged breaches of the 1999 Constitution.
The group’s coordinator, Comrade Jackson Ibe, stated this on Saturday in Abuja, when he reacted to the renewed impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly against the governor.
Ibe accused the governor of committing what he described as a fundamental constitutional violation by refusing to submit the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the legislature, stressing that such an action alone constituted gross misconduct and was sufficient grounds for impeachment.
He said the Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule had also described the move as a constitutional intervention aimed at restoring accountability, stability, and public confidence in the state’s governance.
Ibe said any situation where the executive arm of government fails to account to the people through its elected representatives amounts to a constitutional breach that must be addressed using constitutional mechanisms, including impeachment.
He urged the Assembly not to relent in its resolve, insisting that in a democracy, the constitution must prevail over personalities.
“Where there are no checks and balances, both the state and the country drift towards chaos,” he said.
