A civil society organisation, the Osun Youth Initiative for Good Governance (OYIGG), has called for the arrest, prosecution, and impeachment of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Olumide Wale Egbedun, over allegations that he issued a death threat to a traditional ruler.
The group, in a statement signed by its National Convener, Dr. Akande Adeyemi, urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Tosin Ajayi, to immediately investigate and prosecute the Speaker, describing the alleged conduct as “rascality of the highest order.”
The controversy stemmed from a petition filed on July 29 by the Alasi of Asi, Oba Oyewale Olasunkanmi Isaac (Akorede I), following the circulation of a leaked audio on July 23. In the audio clip, believed to be the Speaker’s voice, Egbedun was allegedly heard threatening the monarch in Yoruba language.
“I will jail you, I swear. I’ll ensure you rot there. You think being a king gives you power over me? I’ll deal with you, and if you’re not careful, you won’t leave that place alive,” Egbedun allegedly said.
The comments have sparked widespread condemnation across Osun State, with OYIGG insisting that Egbedun’s actions constituted not just a personal attack but a broader threat to democratic and cultural institutions.
“No one is above the law. This is not just a personal attack on a royal father but a threat to our democratic and cultural institutions. The Speaker must be held accountable for his words and actions,” Dr. Adeyemi declared.
The group further accused Egbedun of a pattern of misconduct, citing previous incidents, including his alleged public snub of the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Abdul Rasheed Ayotunde Olabomi (Odundun IV), earlier this year, accusations of harassment of a senator’s aide in Ilesa and a public threat against Hon. Musubai in Odo-Otin.
Additionally, OYIGG referenced accusations that Egbedun made derogatory remarks against prominent monarchs, including the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Laaroye II, and against Governor Adeleke’s political adviser, Alhaji Muniru Raji, branding them as “thieves” allegedly involved in land sales.
Calling for Egbedun’s immediate impeachment, the group urged the chairman of the Osun State Council of Obas, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II), and other royal fathers not to allow the matter to be swept under the carpet.
“We call on the Royal Fathers not to allow arrogant politicians like Egbedun to rubbish the respected stool of the throne,” the group stated.
The civil society organisation also cautioned the Osun State Government against interfering in the matter, alleging attempts to intimidate traditional rulers with threats of dethronement.
“We are aware that the state government is trying to intimidate traditional rulers by threatening them with dethronement,” OYIGG alleged.
OYIGG maintained that only swift action by security agencies would restore public confidence in governance and protect the dignity of Osun’s traditional institutions.
