The Grassroot Accountability and Empowerment Programmes in Nigeria (GAEPN) has concluded an assessment tour of projects executed by local government councils in Akwa Ibom State, aimed at evaluating the impact of local government autonomy on grassroots development.
Leader of the delegation, Mr Eze Frances Okonkwo, said the exercise covered several local government areas, including Oron, Etim Ekpo, Etinan, Nsit Ibom, Ikot Ekpene, Uruan and Uyo.
According to him, the tour focused on infrastructure, healthcare, education, rural development and community empowerment projects undertaken by the various councils.
Speaking after the tour, Okonkwo said the delegation observed ongoing efforts by councils to address community needs through infrastructure and service delivery projects.
He noted that local government autonomy had created opportunities for councils to initiate projects tailored to the needs of their communities, while stressing the importance of accountability and prudent management of public resources.
The group urged council authorities to sustain transparency, strengthen citizen participation and ensure that development projects continue to address the priorities of local residents.
GAEPN added that it would continue its assessment of projects in other local government areas of the state as part of its broader effort to promote accountability and grassroots development.
