The Kano People’s Rights Alliance (KPRA) has commended the Kano State Government for what it described as timely and necessary steps to enhance security across the state, particularly around the Government House, following heightened political tension linked to the planned defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

KPRA noted that political activities in Kano State have recently become increasingly tense amid reports that Governor Yusuf is set to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to the group, these developments have raised anxiety among political stakeholders and residents, especially supporters loyal to the Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso-led NNPP.

In a statement issued by its coordinator, Isyaku Lawal Tofa, the alliance said the prevailing atmosphere calls for proactive security measures to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The group praised the state government for strengthening security around key public institutions, describing the action as critical to safeguarding lives and property at a time of political transition.

“We would like to commend the Kano State Government for the enhanced security measures in front of the state government building, which is very important at this time,” Tofa said.

He stressed that security remains a fundamental pillar for peace and development in any society, adding that the political weight of Governor Yusuf makes it imperative for authorities to take precautionary steps to prevent violence or unrest.

“As a human rights group, we believe that security is one of the major pillars that ensure peace and development in any region. With the defection of Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is a strong political figure in the state, it is imperative that strict security measures be taken to protect the safety of the people and ensure that there is no violence or chaos,” he stated.

KPRA also emphasised the importance of paying special attention to governance and security arrangements during periods of political transition, urging the government to remain proactive in protecting residents and maintaining public order.

The alliance further urged residents of Kano State to remain vigilant and resist any actions that could undermine peace and stability. It also urged political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and within the bounds of the law.

In addition, KPRA appealed to the state government to deepen collaboration with private institutions and civil society organisations as part of broader efforts to enhance security and strengthen trust between the government and the people.

“This will help build a good relationship between the government and the people, which will further enhance peace and security in the state,” Tofa added.

Reiterating its position, the group emphasised that security is a collective responsibility and urged all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring that Kano State remains peaceful and stable.
