Group Raises Concern Over Alleged Interference In Kano Corruption Investigations

A civil society group, the Kano People’s Rights Alliance (KPRA), has raised concerns over what it described as alleged attempts by a former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to interfere in corruption investigations being conducted by the current state administration.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its chairman, Maikano Danlami, the group expressed worry over recent political developments in the state, urging all political actors to allow due process to take its course.

According to the KPRA, ongoing investigations by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) into certain contracts have generated public debate, with the group alleging that individuals connected to previous administrations may be uncomfortable with the probe.

The group referenced an ongoing inquiry involving contracts awarded to Novomed Pharmaceuticals, a company reportedly owned by Musa Garba, who has been identified by the KPRA as a relative of the former governor. The contracts, including one valued at about N440 million for drug supply, are currently under review by the PCACC following complaints and petitions submitted to the commission.

KPRA also cited another contract involving borehole water repairs, valued at approximately N660 million, which it said is part of broader procurement processes under scrutiny by anti-corruption authorities.

“These investigations were initiated following complaints that raised concerns about transparency and accountability in public procurement,” Danlami said, adding that it was important for the relevant institutions to be allowed to conduct their work without political pressure.

The group further claimed that tensions between political stakeholders intensified after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf publicly stated that his administration would not shield any individual from investigation, regardless of political affiliation.

Reacting to the situation, the Kano State Government reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and due process. In a joint statement by the Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, and the Director General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the government said Governor Yusuf had directed the PCACC to thoroughly investigate all allegations brought before it.

The statement stressed that the administration’s actions were guided by the rule of law and the need to safeguard public resources.

KPRA, in its statement, urged political leaders and stakeholders to respect democratic institutions and allow investigative bodies to operate independently. The group also called on Kano residents to support anti-corruption efforts through civic vigilance and lawful engagement.

“The fight against corruption requires collective responsibility,” the group stated, adding that it would continue to advocate for accountability, transparency, and good governance in Kano State.

The group called on civil society organizations, the media, and the public to monitor developments and promote peaceful, democratic engagement as investigations continue.
