Group Urges Political Parties To Zone Uyo Seat To Offot Ukwa

A socio-political group in Akwa Ibom State, the Uyo Liberation Movement (ULM), has called on political parties in the state to zone the Uyo State Constituency seat in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to Offot Ukwa Clan ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group said the move would ensure fairness, equity and continuity of the existing zoning arrangement that has sustained political stability in Uyo Local Government Area since the return of democracy in 1999.

The demand was contained in a 13-point communiqué jointly signed by the President of the group, Barr. Udeme Ekott, and the Secretary-General, Elder (Prince) Emmanuel Sam, after a meeting held in Uyo on May 17, 2026.

ULM expressed concern over what it described as attempts by certain individuals to disrupt the established zoning formula for the Uyo State Assembly seat, warning that such actions could undermine the peace and unity enjoyed in the area over the years.

According to the group, Offot Ukwa Clan is next in line to produce the lawmaker representing Uyo State Constituency in the State House of Assembly under the existing rotational arrangement.

“ULM states emphatically that it is the right of Offot Ukwa Clan to produce the next House of Assembly member for Uyo State Constituency in 2027, as Uyo has operated a one-term formula in the House of Assembly,” the communiqué stated.

The movement called on qualified sons and daughters of Offot Ukwa Clan to declare interest in the 2027 Assembly race, assuring that it would support any political party willing to zone its ticket to the clan in the interest of justice and fairness.

While describing itself as a non-partisan organisation, the group warned that the people of Uyo would not hesitate to align with any political platform that protects their collective political interest.

“ULM wants to remind the ruling party that Uyo people are not new to opposition politics and will make that bold statement again in 2027, just as they did in 2011. Uyo Local Government Area is the seat of power, and we deserve better,” the communiqué added.
