A civic group, the Societal Safety Network (SSN), has raised the alarm over an alleged plot to tarnish the reputation of the President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
At a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, SSN’s Deputy Director of Publicity, Comrade Olalere Benedict, claimed that the campaign involved AI-generated voice recordings and doctored videos intended to spread false allegations against Senator Akpabio.
According to the group, the alleged scheme is part of a broader effort to discredit the Senate President and undermine the integrity of the National Assembly.
Benedict accused Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of orchestrating similar propaganda in the past, citing controversies linked to the Ajaokuta Steel Company.
SSN has called on Nigerian security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Security Adviser (NSA), to investigate the matter.
The group also urged the public to be cautious of misleading AI-generated content, warning that the alleged plot could misinform Nigerians and damage the credibility of the Senate.
“We call on security agencies to remain vigilant and take necessary steps to prevent the spread of this malicious propaganda,” Benedict stated.
