Two civic groups, the Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI) and the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has defended the police protection provided for Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying recent criticism by Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, does not reflect the security realities in the country.
In a joint statement signed by GMI’s national coordinator, Samaila Musa, and DWI’s director of strategic communications, Dr. Tunji O. Bamidele, the organisations argued that Seyi Tinubu’s public visibility and political exposure make him a target for attacks.
They recalled that during the tense build-up to the 2023 APC presidential primaries, Seyi Tinubu was physically attacked, a clear indication of the threats he faces due to his prominence and influence.
While acknowledging Soyinka’s global stature, the groups said his remarks on the matter merit a thoughtful and reasoned rebuttal, insisting that his position overlooks the unique circumstances surrounding Seyi Tinubu’s public life and the potential threats he faces.
According to them, Seyi Tinubu’s engagements with young Nigerians, advocacy for youth empowerment and facilitation of opportunities for ordinary youths have placed him in a position that attracts both influence and hostility.
“In a nation where political tensions and violence can escalate rapidly, it is imperative to recognise the need for adequate security measures for individuals in high-profile positions, especially members of the First Family whenever the need arises,” the statement read.
The groups warned that Soyinka’s comments risk downplaying genuine security concerns.
“To dismiss the need for such protection is to disregard the realities of our political landscape and the potential dangers that accompany public service,” they added.
They stressed that security for Seyi Tinubu is not a privilege but a necessary precaution, noting that the country’s security challenges over the past two decades cannot be compared with the periods referenced by Soyinka.
GMI and DWI urged stakeholders to move beyond political rhetoric and prioritise personal safety over political sentiments.
“Seyi Tinubu, given his unique position and the challenges he faces, is deserving of police protection,” the statement said, calling for constructive engagement rather than politicisation of security matters.
