Erling Haaland believes Norway’s impressive FIFA World Cup campaign has transformed the nation’s footballing reputation despite their quarter-final exit at the hands of England.

Norway’s dream run came to an end on Saturday after a 2-1 extra-time defeat, with England midfielder Jude Bellingham scoring twice to send the Three Lions into the semi-finals.

Although Haaland failed to score for the first time in 15 competitive international matches, the Manchester City striker was proud of what his team had achieved during their historic campaign.

The 25-year-old finished the tournament with seven goals in five matches, including a memorable brace that eliminated five-time world champions Brazil in the Round of 16, helping Norway reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 28 years.

Reflecting on the campaign, Haaland said the team’s greatest achievement was inspiring belief across the country.

“How we put Norway on the map is maybe one thing that touches me the most,” he said.

“Hopefully now we can establish something when it comes to the Euros, World Cups and everything because our generation is amazing.

“This also gives motivation to young people back in Norway that it’s possible to play on the biggest stage in the world wearing a Norwegian shirt.”

Haaland’s popularity has grown significantly throughout the tournament, with his goals and engaging personality attracting thousands of new supporters during the World Cup in the United States.

The prolific striker believes Norway have laid the foundations to become one of football’s leading nations.

“I think this changes Norway. I think it changes me,” he said.

“We’re building something in Norway.

“It’s about maintaining this because we’ve shown that it’s possible to become one of the biggest football nations in the world.”

Haaland also paid tribute to England midfielder Jude Bellingham, his former Borussia Dortmund teammate, after the Real Madrid star produced another outstanding display.

“We had so much fun together and I’m not surprised he scored two goals today,” Haaland said.

“I think he’s one of the best players in the world. England are lucky because every team would want a Jude Bellingham.”

Haaland was substituted during extra time after struggling with the intense Miami heat and suffering a dead leg.

Norway manager Ståle Solbakken admitted the striker had exhausted himself throughout the tournament.

“It was not a difficult decision because he was finished, and perhaps I should have taken him off earlier,” Solbakken said.

“We used all his energy and power game after game. He also picked up a dead leg in the second half, together with the fatigue.

“He did everything he could. Seven goals in five games is a fantastic World Cup.”

Despite the painful defeat, Norway leave the tournament with renewed confidence and optimism that their breakthrough campaign can serve as the platform for sustained success on the international stage.
