This year’s Easter celebration in Bayelsa State, has shown how strong and determined the people are in spite of the tough economic times facing the region and Nigeria at large.

Across Yenagoa and other parts of the state, the spirit of togetherness remained alive, even as rising food prices, fuel costs, and inflation forced many families to mark the holiday on a low key.
Also, churches were filled with worshippers who were in the spirit of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, offering prayers for better days, while family gatherings, though observed to be mild than usual, still reflected love and unity.

Compared to Easter in 2024, even with some financial struggles and hardship, people were still able to celebrate with larger gatherings in popular places and drinking spots within Yenagoa, the state capital.

This time, the economic pressure weighed heavily on many, making it difficult for some families to have a feeling of the Easter season. At the popular spots like Ox-Bow Lake, Hamilton Gardens and other joints which are usually filled with visitors, were seen recording low turnout and patronage.

Local markets also felt the pinch, as traders reported fewer buyers and lower sales than in past festive seasons. A local trader at Swali Market, Madam Ebimoboere Sonia, who shared her experience, said, “This Easter was not like before, customers only came for small, important items.
Many people just dey manage because money no dey.”

For many residents, Easter this year was a time to reflect more deeply on the meaning of hope, sacrifice, and faith. Even though the usual fanfare was missing, a group of women whose husbands have been friends since childhood, decided to come together to share meals, familiarize with each other and express gratitude for life.

Speaking on behalf of the other wives, Mrs. Felicia Isena said “Our husbands have been friends since childhood till today and we the wives thought it wise to come together as a group and support one another. The group has been existing for over four years and we see each other once in a while.

“For this year’s Easter Sunday, we thought it wise to organize an outing to see each other and celebrate it together with our kids because we haven’t gathered for a long while. We thank our husbands for the support, it went a long way for us considering the economic situation. We, the wives enjoyed ourselves and the kids really had a good time.”
