Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has sparked a social media debate following his recent comments regarding former presidential candidate Peter Obi, questioning the politician’s leadership style and commitment to human capital development.
In a statement shared via his social media handle. Edochie argued that the former Governor of Anambra State does not embody the communal spirit traditionally associated with the South-East region. He specifically cited a lack of visible protégés or beneficiaries from Mr Obi’s long career in both business and public service.
“The true spirit of Ndi Igbo is ‘onye aghana nwanne ya’ (leave no brother behind). As you rise, you lift others,” Edochie stated. “How can you spend many years in power and as a successful businessman, yet nobody can say he is successful today because of you?”
The actor contrasted Obi’s record with his own tenure in the film industry, asserting that several professionals in Nollywood owe their career success to his mentorship and support. He further suggested that a leader’s inability to lift individuals out of poverty locally reflects their potential performance at the national level.
“If you cannot lift people around you out of poverty, you simply cannot lift Nigeria out of poverty,” the actor added.
