Ebonyi State governor, Francis Nwifuru, has said the state government will bear the cost for the enrolment of all civil servants into the scheme with effect from January 2024.
He promised to commit the sum of N200million for the informal sector participation in the scheme next year.
Nwifuru spoke at the health insurance summit organised by the Ebonyi State Health Insurance Agency (EBSHIA) at the Christian Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki.
He said the move is to ensure that Ebonyi civil servants get better health.
The governor was decorated as the Health Insurance Ambassador by the commissioner for health at the event.
In his presentation, the executive secretary of EBSHIA, Dr Divine Igwe, said the agency was created in 2018 to implement the state health insurance scheme.
“The scheme has enrolled 50,847 enrollees but the governor has approved the state health insurance counterpart fund for an additional 11,500 enrollees.
“Due to space, we selected 10 enrollees from the 171 wards in the state for the summit, making it 1,710 persons present here.”
