Former England captain Sir David Beckham was left heartbroken as he watched the Three Lions crash out of the FIFA World Cup following a 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta, according to a BBC Sport report.
Beckham, who has been a constant presence throughout England’s run to the last four, cut a forlorn figure in the stands after the final whistle. The football icon appeared tearful as he was comforted by his wife, Victoria Beckham, while England’s players processed another agonising exit from the tournament.
Throughout the World Cup, television cameras frequently focused on Beckham and his family whenever England scored, capturing his passionate celebrations from the stands.
Earlier in the tournament, Victoria Beckham became the subject of social media jokes after her understated reaction to Jude Bellingham’s dramatic extra-time winner against Norway in the quarter-finals.
Responding to the online banter, Beckham joked that his wife had simply celebrated differently.
“She was celebrating inside, I promise,” the former England skipper wrote on social media. “I promise her reactions were slightly slower than mine,” he added, alongside laughing emojis.
His comments came after comedian Jenny Johnson humorously highlighted Victoria’s composed expression during the celebrations, describing it as the “classic Posh Spice smile”.
Wednesday’s defeat, however, left little room for humour. As England’s hopes of reaching the World Cup final slipped away, Beckham was seen holding his head in disappointment before being consoled by Victoria, who also looked visibly distressed.
The couple were joined in the stands by three of their children, although their eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, was absent amid reports of an ongoing public rift with his parents.
Beckham knows the pain of World Cup disappointment better than most. The former midfielder represented England at three FIFA World Cups in 1998, 2002 and 2006, captaining the side in the latter two tournaments.
His World Cup career was marked by both heartbreak and redemption. He was sent off for kicking Argentina’s Diego Simeone during the 1998 tournament, an incident that triggered fierce criticism from fans and the British media.
Four years later, Beckham enjoyed redemption by scoring the winning penalty against Argentina during the group stage of the 2002 World Cup.
In a remarkable twist of fate, Diego Simeone’s son, Giuliano Simeone, was part of the Argentina side that ended England’s latest World Cup campaign and booked a place in the final.
Following the defeat, Beckham paid tribute to England’s players and supporters in a message posted on Instagram.
“Heartbreak for us all but memories that inspire and last forever. Thank you to our team, our fans and our country for what you have given us in this World Cup,” he wrote.
Beckham retired from professional football in 2013 after an illustrious career and has since become co-owner of Major League Soccer club Inter Miami. His profile in world football has remained influential, particularly following Lionel Messi’s arrival at the American club in 2023, which significantly boosted the sport’s popularity in the United States.
