Heavy Rain Destroys Over 20 Houses In Plateau Community

A torrential rainfall has wreaked havoc in Darwat-Jol community in Riyom local government area of Plateau State.

It destroyed over 20 houses and displaced several families.

The heavy downpour, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, triggered massive flooding that swept through the area, leaving the residents counting their losses. Some farmlands were also destroyed by the rain.

A resident of Riyom, Mr Damba Dang, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Jos at the weekend.

Dang described the rainfall as one of the heaviest in recent times, saying it overwhelmed the community poor drainage system.

“Many houses, especially those built with mud and thatch, collapsed under the weight of the water. We lost food items, clothing, and other household items. It was a terrible sight,” he said.

LEADERSHIP reports that the affected houses included residential buildings and nearby farmlands, worsening the plight of the agrarian community already grappling with economic hardship.

The residents appealed to the Plateau State government, relevant agencies and humanitarian organisations for urgent provision of relief materials.
