The family of late Nigerian football icon Henry Onyemanze Nwosu, MON, has released the burial arrangements for the former Green Eagles star and 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner.
The obsequies will commence on Monday, June 1, 2026, with a Night of Tributes from 4pm to 7pm at Saint Finbarr’s College, Akoka, Lagos. Nwosu, the youngest member of Nigeria’s victorious 1980 AFCON squad, is remembered as one of the country’s finest midfielders. His creativity and composure on the ball defined a golden era for Nigerian football.
Beyond international glory, Nwosu’s exploits at Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC) made him a household name in domestic football. He later served as a coach and mentor to young players at the club.
According to the burial programme, a Service of Songs will hold on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Umukwoma Umuorie-Naze in Owerri, Imo State, starting at 4pm.
The following day, Friday, June 5, a commemorative football match will take place at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, at 3pm, featuring Lagos Legends versus Imo Legends in honour of the late football ambassador.
On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the funeral rites will continue with lying-in-state at Dan Anyiam Stadium, followed by a funeral mass at his country home in Umukwoma, Naze, Imo State, from 10am to 11am.
Interment will take place immediately after. A thanksgiving service will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Naze, at 10am.
Until his passing, Nwosu remained an influential figure in Nigerian football administration and youth development. He served as a board member of Heartland FC and as a coach with Nigeria’s national under-17 team.
His dedication to nurturing young talent and advancing football in Imo State and across Nigeria earned him admiration from players and fans of multiple generations.
