Okolo characterised Adeniyi’s appointment as a significant affirmation of his leadership and Nigeria’s rising profile in the global customs arena.

In a statement from Abuja, Okolo highlighted that Adeniyi’s leadership of the WCO, which represents over 185 member countries, is a personal achievement and a national triumph that should foster pride and continuity in policy reform.

“The election of CG Bashir Adewale Adeniyi marks a pivotal moment for Nigeria in global trade diplomacy and customs modernisation,” he stated. “This recognition of his outstanding track record is also an endorsement of Nigeria’s role in global border governance.”

Since becoming Comptroller-General, Adeniyi has spearheaded transformative reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service, introducing digital clearance systems and enhancing transparency. Okolo emphasised that these innovations have garnered international recognition.

As a prominent figure in institutional development, Okolo serves as Executive Director of the Centre for Trade and Strategic Policy Development, among other roles. His extensive trade diplomacy and investment career underscore the significance of his support for Adeniyi’s election.

He noted that Adeniyi’s new role comes with substantial global responsibilities, including overseeing modern customs practices and fostering international collaboration.
