According to a recent report by Ericsson, fifth generation (5G) networks are expected to cover 45 per cent of the world’s population by 2026, supporting a wide range of cloud computing applications. This means that businesses can access and utilize cloud-based applications and services with unprecedented efficiency.

Creatives and entrepreneurs, for example, can expect that 5G network will empower them to bring their imaginative ideas to life. The high-speed, low-latency nature of 5G enables the realization of ambitious projects. From immersive AR/VR experiences to interactive multimedia presentations, the possibilities are limitless.

Entrepreneurs in sectors such as tech, medicine, fashion, retail, communications, and media can leverage the capabilities of 5G to drive innovation, collaboration, and economic growth. 5G network is also expected to significantly boosts the capabilities of IoT by enabling massive machine-to-machine connectivity. 5G’s also allows for seamless communication between a vast array of connected devices.

This enables the proliferation of smart cities, smart homes, and smart industries, where interconnected devices and sensors facilitate efficient resource management, real-time monitoring, and predictive analytics. Airtel Nigeria’s recent 5G network launch has ignited discussions for industries with its promise to unlock a new era of connectivity and possibilities for technologies such as cloud computing, augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Airtel’s 5G network is stated to – along with its ultra-fast speed – offer an ultra-low latency of less than 10 milliseconds. The enhanced speed and reliability of the 5G network will enable real-time collaboration, remote work, and on-demand computing resources, fostering a more agile and productive work environment.

With its ultra-fast speeds and low latency, Airtel’s 5G network is poised to transform connectivity and enable innovative applications that were once limited by network constraints. It assures this development is set to open doors to a future marked by increased productivity and enhanced experiences.

According to the chief executive officer, Airtel Nigeria, Carl Cruz, “Our 5G network is set to provide customers with a truly enhanced digital experience.” The network boasts faster download and upload speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connectivity. “With download speeds reaching up to 10 gigabyte per second (Gbps), users can now seamlessly stream high-definition content, engage in real-time gaming, and conduct video conferences without interruptions,” he said.

He said Airtel’s 5G network also enables the proliferation of cloud computing capabilities, with its enhanced speeds and reliability. Cloud-based applications and services can now be accessed and utilized with unparalleled efficiency, enabling businesses to leverage the power of cloud computing for seamless collaboration, on-demand resources, and data-driven insights. This empowers organizations to innovate, scale their operations, and drive productivity in ways that were previously hindered by network limitations.

Moreover, its 5G network converges with other cutting-edge technologies like edge computing, creating a synergy that unlocks even greater potential. By processing and analyzing data closer to its source, edge computing combined with 5G minimizes latency, enhances security, and enables real-time decision-making. This convergence supports the deployment of advanced applications such as autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, and remote surgery, ushering in a new era of connectivity that fuels innovation and drives transformative change across industries.

The edge computing market is expected to reach $43.4 billion by 2027. Airtel’s 5G network facilitates the convergence of edge computing and 5G technology. Cruz highlights that, “5G ushers in a new era of collaboration that breaks boundaries and presents a new wave of economic benefits for this generation and the next. By processing and analyzing data closer to its source, edge computing combined with 5G reduces network congestion, enhances security, and facilitates low-latency services like autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, and remote surgery.”

Cruz said his 5G network provides the foundation for IoT-driven innovations in Nigeria, such as smart energy grids, intelligent transportation systems, and advanced automation in industries. To ensure this is not only accessible to a few, Airtel Nigeria has also stated its commitment to democratizing access to 5G, ensuring that all Nigerians can benefit from this transformative technology. In partnership with Samsung, Airtel is offering affordable 5G devices, including mobile phones and routers.

Speaking further, the chief commercial officer, Airtel Nigeria, Femi Oshinlaja, said this move serves to bridge the digital divide and make 5G accessible to individuals and businesses across the country. “By democratising access to 5G, Airtel Nigeria is laying the foundation for inclusive growth, economic development, and equal opportunities,” he said.

He said the launch of 5G network in Nigeria is not only a technological milestone but also a catalyst for economic growth and innovation. The improved connectivity and expanded capabilities offered by 5G have the potential to attract investments, spur entrepreneurial activities, and fuel innovation. As businesses leverage the transformative power of 5G, industries will evolve, creating new job opportunities and driving economic prosperity. Moreover, the development of smart cities and industries, supported by Airtel’s 5G network, can position Nigeria as a regional leader in technological advancement.
