Rapper Akinbi Bamidele Brett, known as Cheque, has disclosed how his fight with acne almost made him give up his music career.
In a recent interview with Yanga FM in Lagos, Cheque revealed that his desperation to heal his acne led him to buy a makeup product that caused serious damage to his face.
The singer explained that he was nervous about his looks, especially after receiving recognition for his song ‘Zoom’ and signing with a record label. Zoom, his 2020 single, brought him to the spotlight.
The rapper described how acne affected his confidence and self-esteem, making him avoid cameras and women.
“I struggled with acne years back. It was terrible. My desperation to cure it led me to buy makeup that almost disfigured my face. It was embarrassing. I almost quit music. I couldn’t even approach women then.
“After my breakthrough song ‘Zoom’ and I got signed by a record label, it dawned on me that I would be attending interviews and would be in front of cameras. I am a perfectionist. So, I went to get a makeup from a store to clear but instead it almost disfigured my face. I woke up one morning and realised that my whole face has been damaged,” he said.
Cheque also mentioned that the trauma in the end motivated his chart-topper ‘History’ showcasing Fireboy DML.
