Hull Hold Chelsea to 2-2 Draw As Belloumi Double Punishes Alonso’s Blues

Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by newly promoted Hull City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, as Mohamed Belloumi’s first-half double exposed the hosts’ defensive frailties and denied Xabi Alonso a return to winning ways in the Premier League.

Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea an early lead after just seven minutes, but Hull responded emphatically through Belloumi, who struck twice before half-time to turn the game on its head.

João Pedro eventually rescued a point for Chelsea in the second half, but the hosts were unable to find a winning goal despite creating pressure late in the contest.

Chelsea started brightly and took the lead when João Pedro set up Rogers, who finished to put Alonso’s side ahead inside the opening seven minutes.

The early goal appeared to settle the home side, but Hull refused to retreat and gradually began to exploit gaps in Chelsea’s defence.

Their persistence paid off in the 28th minute when Belloumi levelled the contest, with Ryan Giles providing the assist.

The visitors sensed an opportunity and continued to trouble Chelsea, with Belloumi completing his remarkable turnaround six minutes later.

This time, Oliver McBurnie supplied the assist as Belloumi found the net again in the 34th minute to put Hull 2-1 ahead.

Chelsea went into the interval behind despite dominating possession for periods, leaving Alonso with the task of finding a response after the break.

The Blues improved after half-time and eventually restored parity in the 66th minute.

Cole Palmer supplied the assist for João Pedro, who finished to make it 2-2 and give Chelsea renewed hope of completing the comeback.

The equaliser shifted the momentum back towards Chelsea, but Hull remained dangerous on the counter-attack and defended stubbornly as the hosts pushed for a winner.

Chelsea made late attempts to force the issue, but Hull held firm through the closing stages, including six minutes of added time.

The result will be a frustrating one for Alonso, whose side once again showed considerable attacking quality but struggled to maintain defensive control.

Chelsea had entered the contest with a potent attacking trio of Palmer, Rogers and João Pedro, who had already impressed during the opening weeks of Alonso’s reign. The manager had also warned before the match that Hull would provide a stern test, praising their unbeaten start and ability to threaten through transitions and set-pieces. 

Hull, meanwhile, continued their impressive return to the Premier League. The Tigers had arrived at Stamford Bridge unbeaten and with three clean sheets from their opening matches, having quickly established themselves as one of the surprise packages of the campaign. 

Belloumi emerged as the decisive figure for the visitors, capitalising on Chelsea’s defensive uncertainty to score twice in the first half.

For Chelsea, the performance again highlighted the contrast between their attacking strength and defensive vulnerability. The Blues have scored freely under Alonso but have struggled to keep opponents out, with the latest draw extending their problems at the back. 

João Pedro’s equaliser ensured Chelsea avoided a home defeat, but the dropped points will still feel like a missed opportunity for Alonso, particularly after his side had taken an early lead.

Hull, on the other hand, can leave Stamford Bridge with considerable credit after twice coming from behind and holding their nerve against one of the Premier League’s more expensively assembled sides.

The 2-2 draw leaves Chelsea searching for greater consistency as Alonso continues to mould his team, while Hull’s unbeaten start under Sergej Jakirović continues to gather momentum.
