The recent killings in Benue State has been condemned by the Human Rights Research and Advocacy Centre (HURRAC) describing it as unjustifiable and inhumane.

The national coordinator of the human rights group, Zubair Muhammad, stated this while speaking to LEADERSHIP in Kano yesterday.

He added that the act of violence represents a grave assault on the rights to life and security guaranteed under the Nigerian constitution and international human rights law.

“We at HURRAC strongly condemn the recent killings in Benue State, which have once again claimed the lives of innocent Nigerians and shattered the peace of entire communities,”he stated.

He further urged the Nigerian government to act and ensure the culprits are dealt with as provided by Nigerian law.

“We urge the government to act decisively. We cannot continue to treat the lives of Nigerians as expendable.

“I call on the Federal and Benue State Governments to take all necessary measures to stop the bloodshed. This includes deploying adequate security, launching an immediate and transparent investigation, and ensuring that those responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to justice,”he added.

He explained that the continued failure to address these attacks emboldens perpetrators and deepens the sense of fear, displacement and distrust among affected population, saying “this must stop”.

The national coordinator of HURRAC also urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), security agencies, and civil society to collaborate in documenting violations and supporting victims.
