Youths in Sokoto State trooped out in their large numbers on Thursday to join their counterparts from across the country in the nationwide protest against hunger and bad governance.

The protesters converged at the popular ‘Alu flyover’ and this brought commercial activities to a halt before dispersing into adjourning routes, with placards of different inscription.

While some marched towards the popular roundabout (Round Meruwa), another set of protesters also headed to the Sultan Palace to express their grievances.

Protesters were singing solidarity songs while marching peacefully along major streets of Sokoto metropolis with policemen on standby at junctions to forestall any disturbance.

Banks and major business outfits along Ahmadu Bello Way, Kano Road and Sahara axis are however under locks.

The protests later terminated at the Government House, Sokoto, with no government official at hand to attend to the protesters.

One of the protesters, Abdullahi Aliyu, who spoke with our correspondent at the entrance gate of the Government House, lamented the high cost of foodstuffs in the state.

He called on government especially at the federal level, to review some of its policies in order to let the poor in the society breathe.

“We have to join the protests to add our voice to what is happening in the country, we cannot continue like this in this country.

“Our leaders must find a way to balance the situation. You cannot be claiming to be working for us while the people you are working for are starving to death, enough is enough,” Aliyu said.

A motorist who spoke with our correspondent, Mallam Saidu Abubakar, commended the Nigerian Police and other security agencies for controlling the situation without any case of violence in the state.
