The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has concluded Phase 1 of its sustainable livelihood training for 5,000 Ogoni youths and women, issuing starter kits and certificates to beneficiaries. The project coordinator, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, encouraged the trainees to apply the skills acquired to transform the Ogoni region into an economic hub.

At the event marking the commencement of starter kit distribution across training centres, Professor Zabbey highlighted the importance of restoring livelihoods in Ogoni as part of HYPREP’s mandate. He noted that the project has created direct and indirect jobs through its various regional initiatives.

He urged the beneficiaries to use the skills and tools provided to uplift their families and communities and contribute to the national economy. Zabbey emphasised that the initiative’s success depends on participants’ active engagement and warned against selling the distributed starter kits.

“HYPREP’s sustainable livelihood initiatives and remediation project rely on your ownership and active participation,” he said.

The coordinator reiterated HYPREP’s commitment to fulfilling its promises and ensuring inclusivity in its programmes.

He announced plans to expand the next training phase to include high-demand skills such as full-stack development, GIS, cybersecurity, commercial diving, and agricultural enhancement.

Professor Zabbey also revealed plans to launch the Ogoni Peace Award next year to recognise Ogoni’s individuals, organisations, and communities promoting peace and environmental stewardship. He stressed that the success of the remediation project depends on a peaceful and collaborative environment.

He thanked the minister of environment, Malam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and the HYPREP Governing Council for approving the starter kit distribution. He also thanked the Ogoni Trust Fund Board, Shell Petroleum Development Company, JV partners, community leaders, trainers, and the media for their support.

Head of sustainable livelihood, Mrs. Josephine Nzidee, described the successful completion of training in 20 skill areas and expressed satisfaction with the progress.

The Gbenemene of Ancient Bangha Kingdom, HRM King (Dr.) T.Y. Suanu Baridam was among the dignitaries at the event. He called for continued community support for the project.
