Former Osun State governor and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has claimed he governed the state for eight years without owning a personal house, describing himself as the first Nigerian governor to do so.

Aregbesola made the assertion while addressing his supporters in a video that surfaced online on Thursday.

Speaking in the video, the former Minister of Interior said he lived in a friend’s house throughout his two terms in office, insisting he never acquired a personal residence despite serving as governor in his home state.

“I’m the first governor in Nigeria to rule a state for eight years without owning a house of my own,” Aregbesola said.

Emphasising his claim, he challenged anyone with contrary evidence to make it public.

“I stayed in my friend’s house for eight years as a governor in my father’s land. Whoever says that what I’m saying is not true should come out and show me the house I own,” he added.

LEADERSHIP reports that Aregbesola served as governor of Osun State from November 2010 to November 2018. Following the completion of his tenure, he was appointed Minister of Interior by the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, serving from 2019 to 2023.

During his administration in Osun, Aregbesola introduced a number of programmes aimed at tackling poverty, unemployment and hunger, while also implementing reforms in education, healthcare, infrastructure and community development.
