A two-term governor of Kano State, former senator, and minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, has said that he had less than N100,000 in his bank account when he campaigned for the governorship position.

During a press conference in anticipation of the 70th anniversary of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), set to begin on October 12, 2024, Shekarau, who heads the organising committee, emphasised how the organisation has significantly influenced his political, spiritual life and personal growth.

Reflecting on his political journey, Shekarau stated, “When I entered the race, I had under N100,000 in my account, and my foray into politics was not by choice but rather due to persuasion.”

His remarks serve as a firm denial of any allegations regarding corruption or financial misconduct, strengthening his reputation as a leader dedicated to transparency and integrity during his tenure as governor.

“I have never solicited any kickbacks from contractors. I challenge any contractor who has worked with me in the last 44 years to come forward if they have ever been asked for a percentage or any form of payment,” he asserted.

He further clarified, “Throughout my governorship, not a single naira was ever given to me by any of my commissioners or local government chairmen. I never interfered with their financial allocations.”

Shekarau explained that his administration established guidelines and regulations for local governance, enabling chairmen to manage their projects independently.

He cited instances where local governments executed large-scale projects, such as a N100 million road construction, with support from the state’s engineering resources when needed.

He recounted a conversation with an elder statesman just two months before the election, who inquired about his living arrangements if he were to lose. Shekarau replied that he would return to a rented house, having transitioned from a rented home to the government residence.

Discussing the MSSN’s mission, he highlighted its goal of fostering unity among Muslims and instilling a genuine Islamic spirit of brotherhood and faith in Allah as the foundation for achieving peace among humanity.

In closing, he praised the moral integrity of MSSN members, citing himself and the current JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Olarenwaju Oloyede, as exemplary products of the organisation who hold public office.
