Afro-fusion sensation Omah Lay has stirred fresh debate in the music industry after declaring himself the greatest Nigerian artiste of the last two decades.
Speaking on the NandoLeaks podcast, the 28-year-old singer asserted that his creative depth and musicianship remain unmatched by his contemporaries. In a bold assessment of the Afrobeats scene, Omah Lay stated that the only colleague he considers to be on his level is the Grammy-winning Burna Boy.
“I’m the best at this. I don’t mean to brag… but I am the best in the last 20 years,” the singer said. “If you bring together all Afrobeats artistes, when it comes to true artistry and making music, I stand alone at the top. Apart from Burna, it’s just me.”
The singer, known for his vulnerable and often dark lyricism, also opened up about his personal struggles with obsession and his private life. He revealed that his “obsessive nature” led to a period where his personal relationships became “out of control,” causing him to lose himself whenever he fell in love.
Omah Lay’s rise to stardom began in 2020 with hits like Bad Influence, and he has since built a massive global following. Despite his self-proclamation as the greatest, the singer recently faced a setback at the 2026 Grammys, where his collaboration with Davido, ‘With You,’ lost the ‘Best African Music Performance’ category to South African star Tyla.
