Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, has opened up about her experience performing at the official dedication of the Obama Presidential Centre in Chicago.

The event, which took place on Wednesday at the John Lewis Plaza, was part of a three-day event to unveil the $850 million facility ahead of its public opening.

The singer admitted on her social media page that she felt deeply nervous during the event, particularly after she mistakenly called former United States President Barack Obama’s daughter by the wrong name while addressing the audience.

Before her musical performance, Tems had addressed the guests, stating:

“I am so blessed and honoured to be here… this one is to you, everyone, here, to Mr and Mrs Obama, to Sandra, and all the family.”

Following the event, she wrote on her X (formerly Twitter) account:

“Lord knows I was nervous! Please forgive me!!!”

Tems performed alongside a lineup of global music stars, including Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Bruce Springsteen, and Christina Aguilera.

The Obama Presidential Centre also features a portrait by Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby, marking further Nigerian representation at the newly dedicated facility.
