Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has sparked reactions online after a video captured him jokingly telling the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, that he had “beaten” him following the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.

The light-hearted exchange took place on Thursday when Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, paid a visit to Wike in Abuja. A clip from the meeting, which surfaced on social media on Friday, showed Davido engaging the former Rivers State governor in a playful conversation that many have linked to the outcome of the August 15 governorship poll in Osun State.

In the video shared on Instagram by @OfficialPrinceNwauzor, Davido, dressed in brown traditional attire, repeatedly told the minister, “I won. I beat you guys.”

Wike, who appeared amused by the remark, responded, “No, no.”

The singer, however, insisted, saying, “I won! I beat you.”

“You beat us?” Wike asked.

“I beat you,” Davido replied, drawing laughter from those present.

The exchange ended with Davido prostrating before the minister in a traditional show of respect before embracing him, a gesture that was met with cheers, applause and further laughter from others in the room.

The encounter  came days after Governor Adeleke secured a second term in office, defeating the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Oyebamiji, in the Osun governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission last Sunday, declared Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord Party, winner of the election with 511,067 votes. Oyebamiji polled 444,815 votes.

According to the electoral commission, Adeleke won in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while the APC candidate secured victory in 11 councils.

Governor Adeleke’s visit to Wike was part of a series of consultations following his re-election. A photograph shared by Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, showed the minister and the governor holding the latter’s certificate of return.

The Osun governor had earlier visited President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa before meeting Wike.

The viral footage has generated mixed reactions online. While some social media users described the exchange as evidence of healthy political relationships beyond partisan divides, others questioned Davido’s cordial interaction with political figures he had strongly criticised during the election campaign.

Ahead of the election, the singer repeatedly accused the ruling party of attempting to influence the electoral process through the use of federal power. He also publicly stated that he would never join the APC and urged international attention to the conduct of the poll, expressing concerns about potential violence and electoral interference.

Meanwhile, Wike has maintained that Adeleke’s victory was proof that President Tinubu allowed a free and fair election to take place.

Speaking days after the poll, the minister dismissed allegations that the Federal Government manipulated the election in favour of the APC.

“The President called him… congratulating him (Adeleke). What does it tell you? If Tinubu did not allow a free and fair election, would they have won? No!” Wike said.

“When you say force of the federal government… ask those who have survived it, though—people like me who survived federal might. It’s not by saying ‘they say, they say.’ It’s not true,” he added.
