The International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) has appointed Rt. Hon. Jemma Nunu Kumba as Mayoress of Peace in Africa.

This appointment, according to a statement made available to the press by the International Spokesman of IAWPA, Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke, recognised her outstanding contributions to promoting peace, national unity, and democratic reforms in South Sudan.

Amb. Nunu Kumba, who became the first female Speaker of the South Sudan Parliament in August 2021, has played a pivotal role in the country’s legislative and peace processes.

The statement further described her as a trailblazer in South Sudan’s politics, serving in various high-profile government and party roles, including Governor of Western Equatoria, Minister of Housing, and Minister of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism.

Some of her notable achievements include: peacebuilding which led to her co-founding the Sudan Women Parliamentary Caucus in 2004 and participated in national and regional negotiations to strengthen women’s participation in governance and peace agreements.

She is also involved in advocacy by championing women’s empowerment, education, and healthcare, and initiated scholarship opportunities for young people.
