The Taraba State government has procured and handed over 25 data-capture machines to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to boost enrolment for the National Identification Number (NIN) in the state.
Flagging-off the distribution of the machines in Jalingo, Governor Agbu Kefas said the machines would be distributed across the 16 local government areas of the state.
The governor further said that the initiative was aimed at enabling more residents of the state to easily register for the NIN and be captured in the national identity database.
He explained that the procurement and distribution of the machines form part of his administration’s support for the Federal Government’s target of achieving 95 percent enrolment of citizens in the national identity database.
The governor therefore charged local government chairmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other political stakeholders to ensure that the machines are properly distributed across the state and used strictly for their intended purpose.
The Taraba State Coordinator of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mrs Sarah Babangida, commended Governor Kefas for procuring the equipment, noting that the machines would significantly improve the enrolment process across the state.
According to her, the initiative goes beyond a ceremonial presentation, and described it as a strategic investment in the future of Taraba residents.
She explained that identity remains the foundation for access to essential services, social protection programmes, effective national planning and improved security coordination.
Mrs Babangida assured the governor that the commission would deploy the machines transparently and efficiently to expand NIN enrolment across the state.
