A historic royal pact has been sealed between the Idoma Kingdom of Benue State and the Ondo Kingdom.
The bond promises a new era of fraternity and strengthened ties between the two ancient Nigerian monarchies.
The significant agreement was formalised during a recent courtesy visit by His Royal Majesty Agabaidu, Dr Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, the Och’Idoma and Paramount Ruler of the Idoma Kingdom, to His Imperial Majesty Oba Dr Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo, Jilo the Third, the Osemawe and Paramount Ruler of Ondo Kingdom.
According to a press statement from the Och’Idoma’s media unit, the royal engagement signifies a renewed connection between the kingdoms. The Och’Idoma expressed profound gratitude for the warm reception, describing the interaction as a rare privilege and a testament to the enduring nobility of African traditional leadership. He extended greetings from the “land of the great red earth, Idoma Kingdom, renowned for dignity, courage, hospitality, and deep reverence for cultural heritage,” thanking the Osemawe for the hospitality, particularly during his conferment with an honorary Doctorate Degree in Theology at Wesley University.
During his visit, the Och’Idoma lauded the impressive progress at Wesley University, noting the contributions of two prominent Idoma sons, Dr Pastor Paul Enenche and Professor Samuel Obeka Sunday, who serve as Chancellor and Vice Chancellor respectively. He also expressed heartfelt appreciation for a forthcoming chieftaincy honour for Professor Obeka, stating, “By honouring him, you honour not nly him but the entire Idoma Kingdom.” He emphasised that traditional titles are “a sacred trust that comes with blessings and responsibilities,” urging title holders to maintain dignity and restraint to avoid bringing the honour into disrepute.
Highlighting deep historical ties, the Och’Idoma recounted his family’s extensive connections with Yoruba communities, underscoring the long-standing fraternity and mutual respect between the Idoma and Yoruba peoples. He described the meeting as a reaffirmation of unity, shared values, and a commitment to peace, cultural preservation, education, and national unity. He also encouraged Idoma youths to consider Wesley University for their studies.
In response, the Osemawe declared the day a memorable one in Ondo Kingdom’s royal history. He formally cemented the new alliance by inviting the Och’Idoma to be the Royal Father of the Day at the Ekimogun Festival on 27th December 2025, calling it “the beginning of great things to come between our kingdoms.” The Och’Idoma joyfully accepted the invitation, reciprocally inviting the Osemawe to the forthcoming Idoma cultural festival.
Both monarchs concurred that this encounter marks the genesis of a deeper, enduring royal partnership, poised to enrich their communities and bolster the moral authority of traditional institutions across Nigeria. The renewed fraternity, anchored on honour, trust, and the timeless strength of African royalty, was sealed with mutual prayers for peace, prosperity, and stability.
