In a statement issued to newsmen yesterday in Abuja, the Deputy Director of Press at the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Suleiman Haruna, disclosed that the Minister made this remark during the unveiling of a television documentary titled “Traverse China with Me,” a collaborative effort between the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the China Media Group (CMG).

The Minister indicated that the documentary, which aims to strengthen the relationship between Nigerian television stations and the Chinese media, is part of broader efforts to enhance ties between the people of Nigeria and China through cultural and language exchanges and modern communication channels available in both countries.

He commended the authorities of CMG and NTA for their efforts in providing accurate news and meaningful programs for the advancement of both nations. He noted that this collaboration would positively impact social affairs, economic development, and cultural advancement.

He reiterated the importance of balanced news reporting, especially in highlighting progress and achievements and producing programs that inspire hope for future growth.

He said Nigeria is home to a vibrant youth population that is dedicated and working hard to seize opportunities despite significant challenges.

He observed that these challenges are exacerbated by the proliferation of fake news, rumours, and misleading information, which leads to setbacks and distrust between the government and its citizens.

He called on Chinese media outlets to collaborate with Nigeria and international counterparts to counter this negative trend and ensure reliability and credibility in disseminating information.

The Minister also urged CMG to expand its media presence in Nigeria by incorporating more languages, including Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and Pidgin, to convey messages more effectively and provide employment opportunities and training for Nigerians.

Early, the director for Hathe USA Language at CMG, Kande Gao, highlighted the close relations between China and Nigeria, noting that they share a common destiny and urging further collaboration.

She revealed that CMG plays a crucial role in fostering this understanding, which is why programs like “Traverse China with Me” are produced in partnership with stations like NTA.

She also noted that analysis has shown the program to be popular in Hausa-speaking areas, as Nigerians are deeply engaged with its content.

Among those in attendance at the event were representatives of the Nigerian Television Authority, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Voice of Nigeria, and the Nigeria Broadcasting Corporations
