The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASETU), has called on the President Bola Tinubu administration to ensure the unconditional release of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The national president of ASETU, Chief Emeka Diwe,  renewed the association’s call for Kanu’s freedom as the Supreme Court announced December 15 for the hearing of the matter.

In a statement signed by the ASETU national president in Owerri, he submitted that the IPOB leader ought to have been released by now owing to the judgement of the Abuja Appeal Court that discharged and acquitted him in 2022.

Chief Diwe maintained that the federal government must not fail to use the opportunity of the December 15 Supreme Court ruling to ensure Kanu’s release without any string attached.

The ASETU boss queried why it has become difficult for the federal government to set Kanu free even when the association has at various times appealed to them to release the IPOB leader to them and charge the consequences of his release to their account.

Chief Diwe expressed optimism that the release of Kanu would reduce insecurity in the South East and possibly put a stop to the sit-at-home declared by non-state actors with huge adverse effects on the economy of the South East states.

He noted that most agitators in South East have pointed at the incarceration of Mazi Kanu as the reason for their agitation and expressed hope that his release would drastically reduce the ugly menace.
