IGP Disu Backs State Policing, Strategic Police Reforms

The inspector-general of police, IGP Olatunji Disu has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to police reform, state policing and stronger inter-agency collaboration following a high-level visit by the leadership and participants of the National Defence College to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The delegation, led by the Commandant of the College, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, visited the Force Headquarters on Tuesday as part of the activities of National Defence College Course 34, aimed at examining how participants’ research can contribute to national security policy and community policing.

During the visit, the participants presented the outcome of a strategic research paper focusing on state policing, command and coordination protocols, police reform and other emerging internal security issues.

Rear Admiral Ahmed told the IGP that the study was entirely researched and developed by police officers undergoing the course, with faculty members providing only academic guidance and methodological support.

According to him, the participants relied on their professional experience, critical thinking and research to produce practical and implementable recommendations capable of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges through 2035.

He expressed confidence that the findings would enrich the national discourse on police reform while strengthening the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force in tackling emerging threats.

In his speech, IGP Disu described the research as timely and highly relevant to Nigeria’s changing security environment.

He commended the officers for producing a study that combines academic rigour with practical policy recommendations.

Disu noted that the research provides a solid foundation for developing a framework for state policing, particularly through its comprehensive analysis of public concerns and lessons drawn from countries operating state police systems.

He reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the National Defence College and other strategic institutions to enhance effective policing, strengthen internal security and support national development.
