Members of the Ethnic Youth Leaders have described the visit of the inspector-general of police (IGP), Tunji Disu, to the survivors of the bombings in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, as both consoling and reassuring.
According to them, the action of the newly appointed police chief is a demonstration of sympathy and empathy for the victims of the blasts and consolation to the families of the survivors.
The youth leaders, in a statement by their deputy spokesperson, Mirabel Ashara, said Disu’s prompt response showed his deep commitment to tackling insecurity from the frontline rather than the sidelines.
They said the presence of the police boss shortly after the ugly incidents would bring succour to the victims and rekindle hope to the entire residents of Borno that their security is receiving serious attention.
The youth leaders urged other heads of security agencies and services chiefs to learn from their police counterparts on how to approach security issues from a humanistic perspective.
The group added that, beyond sympathising and empathising with the victims, the visit affords IGP Disu the opportunity to conduct an on-the-spot assessment with a view to addressing the security challenges in the north-eastern state headlong.
“We commend the Inspector-General of Police(IGP), Tunji Disu, for his show of sympathy and empathy to the victims of the bombings that rocked Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, on Monday.
“Rather than staying in the comfort of his air-conditioned office at the Police Headquarters in Abuja to issue statements and orders, the IGP has taken a different approach by going to Maiduguri to physically see things for himself. This is a demonstration of deep commitment to the security of life and property.
“His action was equally appreciated by the deputy governor, Usman Umar Kadafur, who received the IGP when he said: ‘For an incident that happened last night and for you to be on the ground this morning is a sign of seriousness’.
“The deputy governor who received Disu also confirmed that the IGP’s presence underscored the federal government’s concern for the safety of Borno residents as he reaffirmed the state’s commitment to continued collaboration with security agencies,” they stated.
