The inspector-general of police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba has appealed to Nigerian parents to encourage their children and wards to take interest in pursuing a career in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) as the most veritable platform to contribute to national service.

The IGP said the new police which is adequately imbibed with courage, servitude and compassion is being evolved with a renewed vigour to perform its statutory duties in the enforcement of law and order as well as protection of life and property.

Speaking in Bauchi yesterday at the graduation of 10,000 police constables nationwide simultaneously in four premier colleges and 12 police training schools across the country, the police boss said the recruitment drive would sustain the Force vision for an efficient police force in the country.

The IGP, who was represented by AIG Zone 12 Bauchi, Olokode Taoheed Olwale, appreciated the commandants of the police training schools and institutions and the entire staff who had within the period transformed, nurtured and tutored the trainees through the rigours of the exercise.

A total of 604 constables graduated from Zone 12 of the Force as the breakdown showed 375 from Bauchi state, 228 from Gombe state and only one from Yobe State.

Baba said the 2022 batch of recruits had wrapped up six months of highly challenging, rigorous, physical and intellectual training activities which signified their transition into mainstream professional policing duties with the right orientation to meet emerging security challenges within the dictates of the law.

Baba described the passing out ceremony as a giant stride by the federal government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari towards repositioning the NPF by addressing the lingering manpower gap in the Force which has been inhibiting optimal police service delivery in the country.

He said, “The federal government’s policy of recruiting 10,000 police constables annually over three years shows the commitment of Mr President to bequeathing to our beloved country a reformed and well-positioned police force with renewed capacity and commitment to attain its internal security mandate.”

The IGP said the graduating constables would be deployed to complement officers on the forthcoming election security duties across Nigeria in the bid to ensure a free, fair and credible electoral process. According to him, they would be posted to their respective local government areas to further entrench the policing strategy of the government.

He reminded them that they were coming into a “reformed police force that is experiencing an ethical rebirth, a force that is increasingly equipped, well-focused and properly oriented to take the war against threatening our shared values for peace, security and liberty.”
