The Ijaw people of Gelegele in Ovia North East local government area of Edo State have challenged Governor Monday Okpebholo to silence his critics with massive, people-oriented development.
They noted that the recent Supreme Court judgement, which affirmed his 2024 governorship election, has heightened expectations among the people of Edo State and beyond.
The chairman and secretary of the Gelegele community, Omaghomi Olu-Derimon and Ayenimibofa Apohi, respectively, have advised in a congratulatory statement following Okpebholo’s Supreme Court victory.
The community urged the governor to be magnanimous in victory and work with all, irrespective of political affiliation, to reposition the state for greatness.
It further urged the governor to bridge the gap in development and representation across every part of the state, particularly the Gelegele community.
“We, the people of the Gelegele community, are thrilled that our votes counted, and our voices were heard. Your triumph is a testament to your leadership and vision for Edo State.
“We look forward to witnessing the positive impact of your administration, particularly in terms of economic and infrastructural development.
“We hope that your leadership will prioritise the needs of all communities, including the riverine areas with a historical background of marginalisation, underdevelopment, and underrepresentation by successive administrations in the state,” it stated.
The Ijaw community appealed to Okpebholo to establish the Edo State Rivers and Waterways Agency to tap into the opportunities at the newly established Ministry of Blue Marine Economy and the federal level.
