The Ijaw Women Advocates for Justice has called for strict adherence to due process and fairness in the ongoing judicial proceedings in the United Kingdom (UK) involving former minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Alison-Madueke, who served as minister of Petroleum Resources under former President Goodluck Jonathan from 2010 to 2015, is currently standing trial in the UK over allegations connected to the awarding of Nigerian oil contracts.

She is being tried alongside her brother, Doye Agama, 69, and oil executive Olatimbo Ayinde, 54. Agama has denied allegations of a conspiracy to commit bribery involving his church, while Ayinde has pleaded not guilty to charges including bribery of a foreign public official.

In a statement issued to journalists on Monday in Abuja, Dr Timiebi Koripamo-Agary said the group’s intervention was not aimed at defending any individual, but at upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law.

The group cautioned against attempts to turn the matter into a public spectacle, insisting that the proceedings must remain strictly within the judicial framework.

According to them, any attempt to shape public opinion while legal proceedings are ongoing undermines the integrity of the judicial process.

They further stressed that every individual, regardless of status or past office, is entitled to a fair hearing, due process, and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

The group also acknowledged Alison-Madueke’s past leadership roles, including her tenure as the first female President of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), noting that her record should neither attract immunity nor prejudice.

“Her record should neither attract immunity nor prejudice, but rather a balanced and fair assessment,” the group stated.

“We stand in solidarity not to shield wrongdoing, but to ensure justice is done lawfully and without bias.

“We caution against media sensationalism and selective narratives.”

They urged the public and the media to avoid what they described as “trial by media,” adding that justice must be guided strictly by evidence presented in court, not public opinion or speculation.

Responding to questions, the group reiterated that their message was directed at Nigerians and government institutions, urging patience and respect for ongoing judicial processes.

They maintained that they deliberately refrained from commenting on the substance of the case, which is already before a court, focusing instead on advocating fairness and due process. “Let the courts do their work. Let evidence speak for itself,” the group added.
