Ijaw Youths Write Edo Govt, Seek Police Action Over Attack On Activist

The Concerned Ijaw Youth Organisation (CIYO) appealed to the commissioner of police in Edo State to investigate the alleged assassination attempt on human rights activist, Comrade Gbale Joseph, and ensure the arrest and prosecution of those behind it.

The group, in a petition, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Edo State government to publicly condemn the incident and warned that failure to act decisively could trigger protests in the state.

Through its president, Olu Preye Oyei, CIYO said beyond the specific case, the state government must guarantee the protection of all irrespective of tribe, creed, or political affiliation.

“The safety of every citizen is paramount, and no one should be left vulnerable on account of identity or opinion,” Oyei said.

The group further warned that it would mobilize Ijaw youths and civil society allies for peaceful mass action if the petition is not given the desired attention within the stipulated timeframe.

“We will not hesitate to exercise our constitutional rights to protest if justice is not served,” Oyei added.

Providing background to the incident, CIYO said the alleged attack occurred on April 5, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m. in the GRA area of Benin City, when Joseph reportedly honoured an invitation to meet at a private residence. He was allegedly confronted by armed men and narrowly escaped death in what was described as a coordinated assault.

Oyei noted that the matter has been reported to the police but expressed concern over what he described as a disturbing pattern of intimidation against outspoken individuals.

“An attack on Comrade Gbale Joseph is an attack on justice and the fundamental right to life guaranteed under the Constitution,” he said.

He reiterated the group’s demand for a public condemnation of the attack within 48 hours, immediate police action to apprehend the perpetrators, and adequate security protection for the victim, insisting that “the life of one Ijaw son is the life of all, and we will not remain silent in the face of injustice.”
