Immediate-past President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has said Nigerian men must begin to take their mental health seriously, to ensure their well-being.
The Yobe North lawmaker noted that challenging unhealthy stereotypes in society was one of the ways for men to embrace healthy living.
Lawan, in a statement, on Sunday, to commemorate this year’s International Men’s Day (IMD) 2023, underscored the need to promote healthy living for men and boys, whom he described as positive role models in families and communities.
The statement signed by his media adviser, Dr. Ezrel Tabiowo, quoted the former Senate President as saying; “I join to celebrate the International Men’s Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities.
“This year’s International Men’s Day theme, ‘Zero Male Suicide’ encourages men and boys to take care of their physical and mental health, challenge unhealthy stereotypes, and seek help when needed. In underscoring the well-being of all individuals, we must recognize the importance of promoting healthy living and well-being for men and boys in our community.
“Men play a crucial role in our society, and it is important to recognize and appreciate their contributions and the positive impact they have. International Men’s Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about men’s issues and to promote positive masculinity.
“I believe that by promoting better health, and addressing the challenges that men and boys face, we can create a more inclusive and supportive community for all.
“I encourage everyone to join in celebrating International Men’s Day and to take this opportunity to support and uplift the men and boys in our lives.”
