The Imo State Police Command has arrested six security operatives, including an Inspector, for extorting motorists.
The suspects include Police Inspector Odidika Augustine, aged 37; three NDLEA operatives, Kelechi Chijoke, aged 30, David Nwaji, and Ikechukwu Nwaka aged 28 each.
Others are 28-year-old Israel Obijiaku and 33-year-old Timothy Omodi of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Imo State Police Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, in a statement on Tuesday, said the operatives hid under the Operation Search Flush in State, to fleece youths of their hard earned money using Point of Sale (PoS) terminals, and engaging in unlawful seizure and checking of mobile phones.
According to Okoye, the recalcitrant operatives brought untold hardship on their victims.
LEADERSHIP reports that there had been a public outcry over the attitude of some security operatives, including Policemen, on the rising spate of extortions in the State.
Several people had in the past called out the Police over the unscrupulous activities of the Joint Task Force operatives in the State.
