The Commissioner of Police for Imo State, Audu Garba Bosso, on Tuesday, decorated 462 newly promoted Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) in the State Command.
Bosso did the decorations during the CP’s Conference held at the Command headquarters, Owerri, the Imo State capital.
He charged the newly promoted operatives to redouble their efforts, as their promotion attracted more responsibility.
CP Bosso said, “Your promotion comes with greater responsibility and accountability. I urge you to lead by example in conduct and service delivery.”
‎The decoration ceremony marked a significant milestone for the officers, who were recently elevated from the rank of Inspector to ASP.
He, however, told the Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), tactical team commanders, and heads of departments, that under his watch, there will be zero tolerance for misconduct and unprofessional conduct.
Further, he warned against extortion, harassment, high-handedness, any abuse of office in interactions with the public, violations of human rights, including unlawful detention, arrest by proxy, and interference in civil matters.
The Police boss charged the officers to discharge their duties with respect for human rights.
CP Bosso disclosed that he would commence unscheduled visits to police cells, checkpoints, and divisions across the State to ensure strict adherence to professional standards and operational guidelines.
Only last week upon resumption of duties in the State, CP Bosso dismissed three policemen for kidnapping, armed robbery, and car snatching.
The dismissed operatives are ex-Sgt Gift Ekwueme, ex-Sgt Ikechukwu Eto, ex-Cpr Divine Okwuaru, and a commercial driver, Alex Chukwu. They were said to have kidnapped and extorted one Mr Obinna Egbu to the tune of ₦1.7million in Owerri at gunpoint earlier in February.
They had posed as operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (Tiger Base) and extorted money from the abroad returnee.
The three policemen were found guilty at an orderly room trial after which Bosso approved their dismissal.
The four suspects are currently held at the Police Command headquarters and will be arraigned before a law court.
Meanwhile, the Imo Police boss has reiterated that the command was dedicated to professionalism, accountability, and protection of the rights of all citizens, even as it sustained the fight against crime and criminality in the State.
